The company attempted to move production to Mexico and Puerto Rico but deemed the quality insufficient.

During the 1970s, Carlos Fuente, Sr. established communication with a representative of the emerging Nicaraguan cigar industry. As a result, the company shifted its production to Estelí, a region in the northwestern part of Nicaragua. Unfortunately, during the Nicaraguan Revolution in the fall of 1979, the Fuente factory was destroyed in a fire.

After facing a great loss in Nicaragua, Carlos Fuente Sr. took a loan against his house to raise capital. His son Carlos Jr. also contributed whatever money he had, and the family relocated to the Dominican Republic to start fresh. According to Carlos Fuente, Sr., the crucial decision to start building an inventory of Tobacco Leafs proved to be a pivotal short happy life.

Initially, Arturo Fuente's profits were reinvested into tobacco in the Dominican Republic. Aged tobacco was of utmost importance to them as cigar makers. With an abundance of aged tobacco, their success grew gradually over time.

A factory measuring 12,000 square feet was opened in Santiago, Dominican Republic, by Tabacalera A. Fuente in September 1980.

In the mid-1980s, the company achieved its first successful launch during its "Dominican Period" with the Hemingways line. This medium-bodied cigar line utilized unique shapes to stand out in the market.

In the late 1980s, the company started growing tobacco on a larger scale and built roads and curing barns to support it. They also attempted to grow their own wrapper leaf, which is the most challenging and risky part of making a cigar.

The Father and Son received many criticisms from renowned cigar experts who claimed that producing a high-quality cigar wrapper from Dominican Republic soil would be impossible. A Dominican Republic wrapper was impossible to grow. However, The Fuente Family persevered and demonstrated their resilience by creating the Chateau de la Fuente Opus X wrapper, born about 25 years ago.
